Storage

Storage is often treated as an afterthought in logistics – something shippers figure out after freight arrives rather than planning for in advance. But at Holland America Inc (DBA HollandXP) , we know that smart storage strategies can reduce costs, improve delivery times, and protect inventory from damage or theft. Whether you need short-term storage during a warehouse transition, seasonal overflow capacity for peak demand, or long-term warehousing for raw materials or finished goods, this post covers everything you need to know about modern storage solutions – from security and climate control to inventory management and cross-docking. As a licensed freight broker operating under USDOT #4032170 and MC #1523691 , we partner with vetted warehousing facilities across the United States to offer flexible, transparent storage options for clients of all sizes.

Many shippers see storage only as a cost, but smart storage planning can reduce delivery expenses and improve efficiency. Poorly planned storage leads to wrong locations, limited space, or missing features. HollandXP helps businesses optimize storage by analyzing customer locations, seasonal demand, and inventory needs to create cost-effective supply chain solutions.

Types of Storage Available

Not all storage facilities are the same, and not all storage needs require the same approach. HollandXP works with a network of vetted warehouses that offer several distinct storage models. Public warehousing is the most flexible option – you pay only for the space you use, typically measured by pallet positions or square footage per month, with no long-term commitment required. This works well for seasonal businesses, companies testing new markets, or shippers with unpredictable volume. Contract warehousing involves a dedicated space within a larger facility with terms typically ranging from one to three years. Rates are lower than public warehousing, but you commit to minimum volume.

This works for established businesses with stable, predictable inventory levels. Private warehousing means owning or leasing your own facility. This offers maximum control but requires significant capital investment and operational expertise – rarely the right choice for small or mid-sized shippers. Finally, cross-docking is not traditional storage at all – freight arrives, is sorted, and loads onto outbound trucks within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This eliminates storage costs entirely while enabling faster transit times. HollandXP helps clients evaluate which model fits their volume, seasonality, and customer locations.

How Storage Integrates with Your Shipping Process

Storage does not exist in isolation. The warehouses you choose directly affect your shipping costs, transit times, and customer satisfaction. A warehouse located near a major port or rail ramp can reduce drayage costs significantly compared to a facility fifty miles inland. A warehouse located near your largest customer concentrations can enable same-day or next-day delivery that would be impossible from a more distant location. A warehouse with on-site truck docks and carrier relationships can load outbound freight faster than a facility that requires scheduling days in advance.

HollandXP considers all of these factors when recommending storage solutions to clients. We do not simply maintain a list of warehouses with available space. We match client shipment patterns to facility capabilities, transit lanes to carrier networks, and inventory turns to storage pricing models. The result is a storage solution that does not add cost and complexity to shipping but rather reduces both. When storage is planned as part of the shipping process rather than as a separate function, shippers save money on both line items simultaneously.

Provide secure solutions

Security requirements for stored inventory differ from security requirements for freight in transit, but the principles are similar: verify the facility, monitor access, and maintain documentation. At HollandXP, we apply a five-point vetting process to every warehouse in our storage network before recommending them to any client. This includes twenty-four seven video surveillance with recorded footage retained for minimum thirty days, controlled access with individual key codes or biometric entry rather than shared keys or combinations, climate monitoring for temperature-sensitive inventory including automated alerts if readings fall outside specified ranges, fire suppression systems inspected quarterly per National Fire Protection Association standards, and liability insurance verified at levels appropriate to the value of goods stored.

For pharmaceutical or food storage, we go further – requiring facilities to maintain Current Good Manufacturing Practice certification and providing additional temperature and humidity documentation for audit purposes. For high-value goods such as electronics, aerospace components, or luxury goods, we recommend facilities with motion sensors, intrusion detection, and armed response service. HollandXP does not take a one-size-fits-all approach to storage security. We match security requirements to the value and sensitivity of your inventory, and we do not charge extra for basic security features – they are simply part of how we select and vet our storage partners.
